1. wasn’t there a parent who got charged for man-slaughter at a hockey game? kind re-dic if you ask me. i use to be a hockey goalie and nothing happened like that thou, maybe just dont allow drinking during a game

2. You’re right about the parents needing to get their hands off the kids’ sports. One of my kids is a Babe Ruth all-star who’s been playing since Little League, and some of the parents over the years have said and done some pretty dumb things. Fortunately, they’ve been the very tiny minority, as most folks really get the concept of sportsmanship and discipline.

   This incident looks like a case of a parent sticking his nose in where he had no business. Hey, I played high school football. If we showed up 10 minutes late for practice, coach did not care why. We ran laps, and our folks just said “next time get ready 10 minutes earlier” — and THAT WAS THAT. No interference, no shouting, no coddling. You were late, you ran laps and that was the end of the matter.

   Not so today. Now parents always try to get their kids out of everything. Doesn’t matter what the rules are, the parents try to wiggle and weasel and say whatever they need to say in order to get their kid excused. And here we are, with a coach and a parent brawling because people no longer have decent judgment to remember where the lines traditionally were drawn. The coach was wrong for “taking it outside” but the parent was fully in the wrong for opening his big mouth in the first place. So he shot his mouth off, the coach gave him a black eye, and the big-mouth goes running to the police.

3. I live in Wilmington. This is from thier policy book:

   “Starting from August 1st, a football player is allowed:
   1. A total of four (4) unexcused absences for practices/game day. After 2 unexcused absences, you will be “spoken to”, after 3 unexcused absences, you will receive written notification; and after 4 unexcused absences you will be dismissed from the team
   2. This includes vacation time, sick time, and any other time off for non Pop Warner related activities for the entire season.
   3. Additional time off missed beyond the allowed limit will warrant your dismissal from the squad.
   4. NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE.
   5. Plan your vacation and “other” commitments accordingly; they should not conflict with games.”

   So if you miss four practices, you are thrown off the team! Keep in mind also they have them practice three times a week.

   Also, about two weeks ago a mother brought a case of Gatorade for the team, her son was on, for after a game. She was approached by board member(s) and was harrassed for providing it and was “never to do it again”! This was supposedly done because it “hurt” concession sales.

   I think they have to look first into the people running the program, then evaluate coaches from there!!!

4. I have NO problem with a having a kid run who is late for practice…issuing a little discipline (and having the kid warm up before participating) is completely appropriate.

   Shame on that father for passing off the importance of being at things on time…and while I don’t condone violence, this kid’s parent was WAY out of line undermining the coach in front of his kids AND the team. Just gets us closer to the inmates running the asylum…

Greg, I may or may not agree completely with you on everything you say, but I definately agree 100% plus on the comment Leave The Parents Out Of Sports… I have been administering and coaching youth sports for about a decade and I have seen alot, had parents and coaches alike in my face… Come on folks NO ONE was RIGHT in the situation referenced above the Dad should have dealt with his differences in belief with a phone call to the other Dad, titled a coach, after practice. The coach needs to be held to a higher standard and should be banned from EVER coaching youth sports again, aside from any criminal action that hopefully will follow. I will again echo your words, which I have said for years, Get rid of the parents from youth sports and the fun will return to what ever the sport is, and 95% of the problems will go AWAY. PARENTS, you had your child hood, sorry if you screwed yours up or your parents did… don’t screw up you kids too.. SIT BACK and enjoy your kids ride it’s short enough as it is, don’t steal it from them!

6. As usual, parents ruining what is supposed to be a kids sport.

   I reffed a game this weekend where the coach was abusive to his players. And to think that parents think that this is OK and will make them stronger. Wrong answer.

   Coach should be kicked out of the club and the parent should be banned from the sideline as well.

9. Hey when i was in high school in the last 90’s we could only play X amount of innings in a baseball game if we were playing for two different teams on the same day. As far as the coach kicking the dads ass well the kid should run for being late and the coach should be gone form sports or check into AA the rest of the team should of run for the playing being late to teach the kid to should up on time next time the player or dad will maybe car pool if they think they are going to be late. If your late you should have to take a lap not 11 make it real i don’t think that the father ever played a sport in his life ans thats why he reacted the way he did other would of understood why the kid had to run no big deal the kid is going to be in better shape.

11. Everybody has a cellphone these days. The coach at the beginning of the season puts out a letter to the kids and parents saying what the expectations are of the team. Put in the letter that if you feel the child will be late to practice or the game to call the coach and let them know. No call, the child runs. With the child knowing this it also helps teach them some responsibility and respect towards the team. The child thinks they will be late, they’re going to be ontop of the parent to call.

12. Hill-Man — I think the kid should’ve run the laps. Had he been there on time he would’ve run approximately the same amount after he’d run the amount of laps requested. It’s jr. high school age, if the kid isn’t in class on time he gets detention, it’s discipline. Hill Man I usually agree with you on most points, but this time I’m with Spaz. Run the laps get the blood flowing. I’d rather have my kid with his blood pumping high and get hit hard as opposed to getting hit cold and get injured. Pretty much the kid has to warm up, running laps warms you up.

14. This tween made a commitment to be part of that team. He then should fulfill his commitment to his team and be there on time. The coach should have given all of his players his phone number so that his players or parents could call him IN ADVANCE and let him know if they are going to be late. I’m sure the parent has a cell phone. That way when he got to practice, the kid could’ve told the coach he left him a message to let him know he was going to be late.

    If there was no message left, then run. It’s a lap people, not five miles. If you can’t handle the coach’s rules of playing the sport, don’t play. A 12 yr old belongs learning responsibility and discipline. You want to be part of a team, act like a part of a team.

    And more importantly, where does LB get off talking about REAL LIFE? When has LB ever been held accountable for anything?!

15. Punishing a young athlete with running is counter productive. Most if not all successful athletes have excellent speed, can run fast, and enjoy doing it. On the subject of life lessons, what is that athlete being taught when disiciplined with running? He or she will very quicky begin to associate running as a punishment and eventually will loose motivation to run which is not what any coach wants in a player in any sport.

    Unfortunately the unprofessional volunteer coach handled it wrong which I think we all agree on. Just the embarassment of being late infront of his friends and team was probably worse than having to run a lap. A professional coach would have found a different way to get the message across that being late is unacceptable.

    As for the parent, accept the fact that it was your fault for being late and be sure not to do it next time. Name calling and fighting is something for recess.

16. All my life my parents freaked out about being late to anything. Now I am an adult and I freak out because of how I was raised.It is very stressful to live that way.It causes fights with my husband ,he thinks I am Psycho or I have PMS. I have recently tried to be more relaxed about being late and it has helped my relationship enormously ! What is going to happen if I am late? Is the world going to end? Am I so important that the world will stop spinning if I am late?
    As far as sports, I loved Softball in 6-8th grade because it was Fun. I dropped out of softball in High School because my coach was such a psycho about everything, it was not fun anymore.

17. It’s not about discipline more so that it is about warming up and stretching. (and maybe it wasn’t explained that way to Mr VonKahle) For the first 10-15 minutes of each practice all of the kids are running and getting warmed-up. What would have happened if little VonKahle got to practice, started running drills and tore a muscle? His father would have hit the roof that the kid wasn’t allowed to warm up.
    This whole episode was handled wrong by both parties.

18. Please ask LB when he was a Bantam in Hockey what would happen if he showed up to paractice late? I know for a fact he would be either doing push ups or laps. I bet his father would argee with it also and maybe throw in an extra back hander for love. (yes 12 year old play Bantam LB)

19. Totally off the subject, but I didn’t get a chance to call this morning. We have had the H1N1 vaccine at my work for 2 weeks now in both the mist and injectable form. I work at a pediatricians in Brookline.

    On the subject, there should never be fighting between parents at sports and I agree with making the kid run laps even if it’s the dad’s fault. I used to have to do it in youth hockey and it wasn’t a big deal. My dad used to have to screw home from work and I would be getting dressed in the car to get out on the ice on time.

20. Hill Man,the kid had to run laps in order to warm up but the amount was too many.As for your comment on the Charlton Dudley versus Nashoba the score was 12 to 0 then 18 to 0 on the last play.The reciever in the heat of the play forgot to step out of bounds before scoring.30 points is the mercy rule and it’s up to the defense to stop the scoring.

    Matty don’t even waste your time with this fool. In previous posts I proved that he has no idea what he is talking about.

    I have provided facts and links and used many sources including Fox News, but he has his mind made up and no facts or evidence can change it.

    He also does not believe in the concept of facts. The way I see it the facts are facts, and they don’t change. In his world facts are liberal or conservative and can change at any time depending on your arguemt.

    For a great example of this check out his posting in “The Liberal Blitzer in Sheep’s Clothing” from October 21, 2009 @ 9:36 am. I provided him with raw facts, and he went off on some tangent that had nothing to do with the point at hand.

    This guy must have been writing about himself when he wrote:

24. LOL, I guess sometimes, violence is acceptable. No one seems to be screaming over what kind of example this sets. The coach should have let it slide and the matter would not have ended in violence. If the ‘rules’ required dismissal, then it should have been handled in that way.
    If I am late for work, I would hardly expect my boss to become violent. I might loss my job, but that would be it.
    Personally, I would throw both in the County jail for a month. After that, they can file their respective lawsuits accordingly. Personally, PopWarner is going to eat this one in the courts. How to you explain repeated assaults to the face and claim you were “defending yourself”. If I am being “attacked”, I’m not going to be throwing punches to the face. I would prefer to “stun” and remove myself from the situation as quickly as possible.

Do they start looking for men AND women?? Or do they limit their search to men, until they have some reason to include women in the search? According to Liberal “thinking” the police trying to solve a rape-murder CANNOT search only for men. They must look at women, the elderly, quadriplegics, comatose patients, and everyone else because it’s not “fair” to focus on those most likely to be the culprits.

37. First of all parents should keep out of the sports their kids play. There are far to many parents trying to live through their kids. Secondly my son plays for Wilmington and it is standard practice if you are late for practice the kids run… not to punish the kids but because the first 15 minutes of practice is for warming up and lossening up so kids that miss that time run to get ready to go and not hurt themselves. The first day of practice the coach makes policies clear if you dont like the rules then have your kid play badmittin I hear they dont have to run. And finally if your gona run your mouth and make someone look bad in front of his team and 30 other parents when you get your ass handed to you go, home and suck it up. There is no crying in football!
