Soundgarden made their official return at Showbox in Seattle, Washington on April 16th.  13 years after they decided to quit while they were ahead.  By the looks of this footage I found of them doing “Beyond The Wheel”, the evil still lurks inside their souls.  I first witnessed the power of Soundgarden at The Hampshire College Dining Commons back in 1988.  At the time, my roommates and I were keeping Metallica’s “..And Justice For All” on auto reverse when I received a cassette copy of “Ultramega OK” at our college radio station.  The covered featured a stage shot of Kim Thayil, Chris Cornell, and Hiro Yamamato lined up looking like they were laying a serious onslaught on the crowd.  When I removed the well worn Metallica tape and replaced it with the new find it seemed like the world slowed down and mutated into a Creature Double Feature flashback.  It was sludge, black tar like sludge with Kim Thayil’s guitar making freakish noises like monkeys drowning in a lava flow.  Their version of the blues standard “Smokestack Lightning” was an endurance test for my skull.  But most of all it was HEAVY.  The music was like the teutonic plates of the earth colliding with Cornell wailing like a Banshee over it.  The room was instantly divided.  Some saying they were poor musicians ripping off Black Sabbath, others were taken with it but not sure why.

Later we found out they were playing nearby Hampshire College so a couple of us piled into my shitty Cutlass and made the trek to see if these guys were for real.  The Hampshire College Dining Common is not a big room.  Not big enough to handle the tsunami of sound that was coming out of those hairy freaks from Seattle.  You know it’s a good show when the most hardcore of hardcore skinheads is holding his hands over his ears.  It was a continuous sonic slamming for over an hour.  Kim Thayil was making his guitar sound like a screeching T trolley trying to stop from hitting a drunk on the rails.

The next time I saw them was at The Metro(later Avalon) in Boston opening for Danzig.  Pepper Keenan from COC, who were also on the bill, and John Christ, who was playing guitar for Danzig at the time came out to play ”Gun” with Soundgarden.  The sound of the three guitars slowly ramping up the tempo to a molten cacoughony was too heavy to handle.  I almost lost control of my bowels.

I later caught them at Lollapalooza 92 in Restin, VA.  They were more straight ahead garage band at this show.  Tearing through material from Badmotorfinger like someone was pointing a gun at them, making them hurry up.  Still it was a flesh tearing performance.

Since then we have seen Chris Cornell release solo albums that lacked fire, his work with Audioslave which was at times spotty, and a failed experiment at mainstream pop with a collaboration with Timbaland(cue fart noise here).  When I first heard they were getting back together I instantly thought, “He’s not going to be able to hit those panty drenching notes like he used to.”  But if you check the video below, you’ll realize I am more wrong than a Cars reunion without Ben Orr or Ric Ocasek.  Kim Thayil has also retained the ability to make his guitar sound like it’s being worked over by the Spanish Inquisition.  Sweet deafness embrace me…

What the fruit isSlowfest?

It’s Session beer and Slow food.  Hit this link to see for yourself.  It’s Boston’s first Session Beer Festival.  What the heck is Session Beer? It’s beer that is low in alcohol(5% or lower) but high in deliciousness.  Session beer came from the factories and fields of Europe.  Back in the day(late 1800′s early 1900′s maybe?) workers would like to tip a few back for lunch.  To ensure the workers didn’t come back shitfaced, they would be supplied with Session Beer.  It had low alcohol so the workers wouldn’t fall into the razor making machine and they would still be refreshed.  There will be over 30 brewers at Slowfest and since the ABV is low I will try to sample them all.  Below is a list of some of the Breweries that will be representing.

All the food the vendors will be using is locally produced.  Slow Food Boston is one of the sponsors and they promote using seasonal locally produced foods.  I’m all for that!

I’ll be there from 7pm-9pm on Friday, 4/23 but continues on Saturday.  Make a weekend of it!  It’s Session Beer, have a couple.

My stomach is cramped from the uncontrollable laughing.  I might throw up I’m laughing so hard. You know that moment right before you’re completely asleep and the dream world is creeping in as your unconscious is slowly set free?  This is not like that moment at all.  This is more like seeing your 5 year old cousin pooping behind the garage at your family reunion.  You know it’s wrong but hilarious at the same time.  God help me I love William Shatner.  Not just because he IS James Tiberius Kirk, but he just doesn’t give a shit about what other people think.  He loves living in Shtanerworld.  I don’t know if the other guy is a man or a woman but I’m used to seeing Shatner interacting with alien life forms. If you can sit through this without laughing once, you are a humorless ass that thinks American Idol is real.  Happy Earth Day.

Usually every Wednesday at 1pm I talk to Red Sox Manager Terry Francona.  But this week they are in Minnesota and playing an early game, so we spoke to him a day early.  Here, Terry talks about breaking in the new Target Field, more patience early in the season with David Ortiz and Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury’s recovery after bruising some ribs in a collision, and Umpire Joe West’s comments about the Sox and Yankees being the slowest games.  I was particularly interested in what Tito had to say about West’s comments because I know he’s a Baseball purist.  It seems silly to me to try and alter the natural pace of a game to attract more viewers.  Then again, I’ve never run Major League Baseball or tried to Ump a game.  But if they give me a chance I’ll try both.

Terry talks about how he liked the new Target Field:

http://hosted-media.podzinger.com/waaf/archive/Mike_Hsu/2010-04-13_Red_Sox_Manager_Terry_Francona_4_13.mp3

About practicing patience with his players and decision making early in the season and Mike Lowell saying he’ll retire:

http://hosted-media.podzinger.com/waaf/archive/Mike_Hsu/2010-04-13_Red_Sox_Manager_Terry_Francona_4_13(2).mp3

How Jacoby Ellsbury is recovering from his collision with Adrian Beltre and when he can return:

http://hosted-media.podzinger.com/waaf/archive/Mike_Hsu/2010-04-13_Red_Sox_Manager_Terry_Francona_4_13(3).mp3

Francona comments(the best he can) about Umpire Joe West calling the Sox and the Yankees “embarrassing” and “pathetic” on how slow the pace of their games are:

http://hosted-media.podzinger.com/waaf/archive/Mike_Hsu/2010-04-13_Red_Sox_Manager_Terry_Francona_4_13(4).mp3

Don’t forget we also give away Tito’s Tickets to an upcoming Sox game after the interview every Wednesday.
